PERSONALITY & TRAITS |
---|
Xia is a firebrand and a rebel at heart. She doggedly sticks to her to own principles and has little to no respect to tradition or any authority. She's aligned herself with Mars Zeon because she sees Spacenoids as having a right to self-determination and independence, wants to prevent the loss of more innocent lives, and thinks Brant and the new Mars government are a step in the right direction for the good of it's people. But something like a regime change or the decision to use the rail cannon as anything other than a deterrent could easily shift her loyalties.
Another core thing that drives Xia is that she's a thriller seeker. While she takes no joy in killing itself, she'd be lieing if she said she didn't get a rush out of combat or didn't delight in defying death herself. And this is on top of her lifelong fascination with flight. It applies to other aspects of her as well. Even as she's growing older, she's still a sucker for a good party and for the company of someone charming, regardless of gender. She also has a fondness for friendly competition and the sweet taste of victory, and thus takes well to games of all sorts. However, this can get her in over her head, as she's had problems with gambling in the past.
This fast and fiery nature goes pretty deep. She's good at thinking on her feet. And while she isn't near as rash as she used to be in her younger days, this does translate in her tending to improvise more so than planning ahead. And while mostly cool headed, she is often impatient. And when trying to get what she wants from people, she's a fast talker. She tries to discern from people what they want, and then tries to win the over with enthusiasm or even a good lie.
Xia can come off as surly, but is also a warm, kind person in many ways. She sometimes lacks tact and may not always account for people's feelings. And on top of that, she has a tendency to put on a arrogant front as a way to cope with stressful situations. However, she's also observant and takes a lot of joy in helping other people. This means she's a good listener, more than happy to talk to folks about their problems and give the best advice she can. She will use her boisterous nature to motivate and cheer up others. She also likes to look after people in a motherly way, which naturally can be helpful or cause it's own problems.
Another noteworthy thing about Xia is that she's a trans woman. She's not ashamed of it, though it can add to her being self-conscious and a bit of impostor syndrome. She's practiced a lot on her voice, so her voice is husky but no more so than one would reasonable expect from a woman her age. Whether or not people can tell she's trans very much depends; “passing” is a rather nebulous concept in the first place. This may come up a lot under her service in Mars Zeon, or it may not.
Xia also enjoys cooking; perhaps she might serve as a cook within a crew she's a part of.

BIOGRAPHY |
---|
Xia grew up with a largely pleasant childhood. She and her twin brother Qiáng were born to a well off family, their father a successful businessman. The twins were identical, with Xia being assigned male at birth. Qinag was a very nervous child, but polite and pretty bright, while Xia was more of a troublemaker, but a largely energetic and happy kid. Their father's business meant him and sometimes the rest of the family would travel to the space colonies, mostly on Side 1. Among the people Xia met were Hajni, who was like a little sister to her, and another girl her age named Marika who was a talented artist. They became fast friends who stayed in touch despite the distance.
These trips into space cultivated an adventurous spirit in Xia. She and Hajni and made a promise that when they grew up, they were gonna travel together all across the Earth and the Sides. In fact, Xia said she'd give Hajni the tour of Earth herself since her family was rich enough to have a private plane. This drove Xia to become passionate about flying and driven to get her private pilot's license as soon as she could at 17. However, Xia wouldn't make use of this new skill in the way she had hoped.
The Titans had come to power in this time, and with that came the horrendous 30 Bunch Incident. While Marika lived in Shangri-La, and thus was safe, Hajni's home was Colony 30 and she was gassed like so many others. And because of this the innocent lives that Titans had taken weren't just a statistic to Xia, but rather something that shook her to her core and radicalized her. Her own government had mercilessly taken away her dear friend.
When Xia eventually heard of the Anti-Federation “terrorist” group Karaba, she didn't hesitate to run off and join. The rag tag rebels weren't really in a position to turn down volunteers. And since Xia luckily already knew how to fly, she took to piloting a mobile suit rather quickly, especially the Waverider modes of the Zeta Plus units. She engaged with and triumphed over many a Titan's Asshimar in dog fights, albeit with her fair share of close calls and ejections.
The Gryps Conflict was naturally a very formative time in Xia's young adult life. This was the time she reflected and realized she was a woman, and that she sure as hell wasn't going to let the Titans kill her before she could live as one. Though other experiences were more typical. She naturally learned strict discipline. She grew a deep respect and admiration for Hayato Kobayashi while she served under his command, later attending his funeral after The 1st Neo-Zeon War. She gained and lost more comrades, and had to deal with the guilt of taking lives herself. Memories of The Gryps Conflict and First Neon Zeon War stayed with her forever, sometimes ones she remembered fondly but also as something that haunted her.
And so after her time in Karaba, Xia's life went on and was fairly normal for a time. While Xia could have joined Amuro and Bright in Londo Bell, she saw becoming part of the Federation forces as traitorous and so she simply retired back home to China. She became an airline pilot. She went through all the bureaucratic hurdles for gender transition. And on one flight, she even met a nice guy that she later ended up settling down with and marrying.
However, something ate away at Xia that she couldn't ignore: things weren't better just because The Titans were gone. In particular, she became more and more aware of the injustices her own country was committing. She was not a soldier anymore, but still had to do something. And so she found herself involved in other radical groups. This came to a head when Xia was one of the major organizers of a mass anti-government protest. She was later convicted of the arson of a high ranking government official's mansion and incarcerated.
Eventually there was enough public pressure that Xia was released from prison, but there wasn't really anything left for her to come back to. She couldn't go back to her old job and her husband left her while she was in jail. Qiang, who had taken over their father's company, graciously took his sister in. However, Xia was now directionless and for a time spent her days drowning in depression and gambling debt.
A spark of hope kindled inside of Xia again when she started to get caught up on what had been going down while she was in prison. All the Zabis and Diekuns had finally died off and Chairwoman Brandt and the government on Mars seemed to be different than ever other “Zeon” before it. Perhaps she was just desperate, maybe her trust was misplaced, but another atrocity like The 30 Bunch Incident or the annexation of Side 6 wasn't something she could live with happening again, especially if she could have helped prevent it somehow. There was something worth fighting for here.
Some old AEUG contacts were reached, and since much of the AEUG were Zeon remnants themselves, it in turn wasn't hard to talk with Mars from there. Xia was snuck off of Earth and recruited both as a pilot in the Mars Military, but also as the go between for Mars Zeon and anti-Federation groups on Earth. She soon came to become the captain of the Musaka-class cruiser, The Croydon.

HISTORICAL & TECHNICAL NOTES | It may come as a surprise to some that is one of the Zeta Plus A1s that Xia had used in The Gryps Conflict. Upon Karaba's disbandment, Xia had recorded in her Zeta Plus A1 as having been destroyed in battle when in reality she had hid in a remote mountain range. Over two decades later, this Zeta Plus A1 was recovered and restored into a (barely) functional state and used in Xia's escape from Earth and towed by another ship during the actual travel in space.
After Xia and rest of her AEUG/Karaba comrades reached Mars, the Zeta Plus A1 was refurbished and improved upon. It was not only made spaceworthy and given the atmosphere rentry capability of the C-1 and original Zeta, but this old machine was even given performance tweaks in order to help it compete with newer mobile suits. The original beam rifle was inoperable, so it was replaced with the same rifle used by the RF-Dom and RF-Gelgoog, only slightly modified to fit onto the MS during Waverider mode.
Cosmetically speaking, the Zeta Plus Custom was given a color paint job more in line with the original Zeta than the drab grey of most Zeta Plus units. Of course, some extra touches and a good amount of Martian red were added to help differentiate it from the enemy Federation Zeta Plus mobile suits.
It should be noted however, that this is not the only Zeta Plus Custom. A small handful of others are available, either converted from captured EF Zeta A/Cs or from other ZEUG/Karaba donated Zeta units. And once converted the differences are minute.
