Born during the One Year War to a military family in Earth, Matt’s first several years of life were spent being raised by his loving mother and father Jack and Rebecca Davis, though he didn’t get to see his father due to the fact that Jack was a mobile suit pilot and spent a lot of time elsewhere piloting a GM and then more advance units after that. However when Operation Stardust took place and several of Matt’s relatives were killed causing his parents to become bitter, Matt’s life changed. With his father joining the Titans and his mother focusing her phycological degree on keeping Titan soldiers ‘focused’ on the task of maintaining ‘justice,’ little Matt was more often then not in the care of a family friend then his own parents. Then Matt's father was offered an unique duty assignment: he and a considerable detachment of soldiers would be sent to Mars to entrench Titan presence there. Since it would be a long term if not life long duty assignment, family was permitted to go to. Jack agreed, and so he, Rebecca, and Matt were heading to Mars. During the trip Matt's curiosity about mobile suits couldn't be satisfied and he kept wandering into the mobile suit hanger. At first he was disciplined, but soon the mechanics grew to like him and even started to teach Matt some of their skills when it came to Mobile suit repair. Even the senior officers started to let this slip since Matt and the children aboard were the future of the Titans on Mars, so they might as well get them interested in helping out now so they would be even more willing to help when they grew up. Matt's relationship with his father greatly improved since they could bond over the mobile suits, and Jack would even let Matt try out the mobile suit simulators and would give him treats when ever he did well. The only thing that stopped Jack from bringing Matt into a mobile suit and out in to space on a routine escort patrol of the large ship was the commanding officers refusing to bend the rules that far. During the long trip Titan command transmitted to the interplanetary vessel the instructions needed to start making Cyber Newtypes, and started to do just that. It was called the Vanguard Initiative due to these would be the first Cyber Newtypes Titans on Mars and would spearhead the Titans' work on Mars. Several volunteers joined up for the dangerous procedure to become Cyber Newtypes, though one of the scientists asked if they could do this to a child so they'd have a Cyber for much longer then usual. Many objected, saying a child's body wouldn't be able to handle the procedure, while others said a child's more mailable brain would yield greater results. Finally the approval was given, and Jack volunteered his son, telling Matt that it would allow him to become a Titan pilot far sooner. Matt survived and was renamed Vanguard 5 since he was the 5th Cyber Newtype they had. Matt no longer answered to his birth name, only to Vanguard 5. This resulted in his relationship with his parents crumbling till all he really did was sleep in their room before going back out to train. He had almost no free will and his curiosity was completely gone. Now like all Cyber Newtypes, 5 suffered a personality flaw that his mother diagnosed as a mild form of Autism. He would follow orders the letter, but some communication cues went right over his head. he quickly started to have difficulty following orders that were vague and misunderstanding basic instructions, however instructions that had a considerable amount of detail were no problem... to the point that Vanguard would out preform a trained soldier. That being said, he would be ready for what ever was thrown at them when the Titans got to Mars. Save for one thing: when the Titans got to Mars they got news that the Titans back in the Earth Sphere had been completely destroyed! They didn't have a clue what to do now that they didn't have anyone to answer to. Without any authority back on Earth to answer to, the Titans hunkered down on Mars till they could think of something. In the meantime Vanguard 5 kept training and became a very skilled and lethal mobile suit pilot. He was officially more a weapon by the time he was 12, just in time for Alicia’s Rebellion... which made him two years older then Elpeo Ple when she entered combat. Reboot Zeon quickly put the young Vanguard 5 to work piloting a mass production Qubeley, where the use its funnels allowed him to face many Martian mobile suits at once. He was even able to fly his funnels through tight spaces, like hallways, so he could shoot at an unprotected power plant of a building, or cut off reinforcements by just leaving a funnel stuck in a hallway so mobile suit pilots couldn’t even reach their suits. He used that tactic to help capture the underground mobile suit manufacturing facility by studying very detailed maps of the facility. However it became clear that echoes of Matt were still within Vanguard 5 since he had painted the Qubeley a rich emerald and black instead of leaving it black and red. This green coloring and his new name earned 5 the call sign the Emerald Vanguard. However Vanguard 5’s communication difficulties made it hard for him to execute vague commands. These communication issues however turned out to be his salvation since when the Titans started to lash out at both sides, 5 didn’t. He was so taken aback by the sudden betrayal that instead of launching with the rest of the Titan mobile suit pilots that he just sat in the cockpit of his mobile suit, stunned. He didn’t even close the hatch to his Qubeley he was so mentally stunned by this, allowing the combined forces of ReZeon and Mars to capture him and his mobile suit with out even having to draw their weapons. He spent the rest of the war locked in a cell within the newtype labs. With the rebellion over and Zabi the chairwoman, the newtype scientists now were left with the hard decision on what they should do with Vanguard 5. He acted like a seasoned soldier with a taste for blood, but he was still only 12 years old. However with the fusion of ReZeon and Mars Zeon marking a new beginning to life on Mars, the scientists decided to show Vanguard 5 mercy by offering him a new beginning, and even a second chance at having a childhood. So once again he was reconditioned, but this time so he’d have his free will again and to reduce his overpowering temper. The reconditioning wasn’t perfect though. The end result was a boy that was half Matt Rogers and half Vanguard 5 who answered to both names; a boy that was kind, curious, and had a love for machines... but was also a fierce warrior. With his mother and everyone that cared for Matt now dead, Matt was adopted by one of the newtype scientists named Lin Koo, who tried to raise him as a son and not as a military asset. She even tried to steer him away from going back into the military later in his life. However his love for mobile suits eventually led to Lin giving up on the idea of keeping Matt out of the military. After all he was a skilled pilot during the rebellion so his skills could only increase as he grew up, and now that he had morales and free will again he could be an even better soldier. Now as Matt grew up and matured he finally had the freedom to focus his curiosity and desire to learn on other things besides mobile suits, and he chose to focus on history... specifically the history of war and invention to figure out how the heck humanity got to Mars via war. To his surprise he found out that many innovations and accomplishments were made by being afraid that someone would do it first, such as the space race and the first time men landed on the moon. The realization that many people acted out of fear and that fear led to so many technological advancements made Matt realize why they were on Mars; they were all afraid of what the people of Earth would do. Matt also came to the conclusion that some hid their fear behind their anger, then later on would forget they were afraid and simply stayed mad, like the Titans. It also helped this autistic Cyber Newtype mature. Maybe there wasn’t anything Matt could do to get rid of the fear that the people of Mars had, but maybe he could help shield Mars so their fear would decrease a little. Now a bit more mature and wiser, Matt all but threw himself into his studies to become a mobile suit engineer, but made sure to keep his piloting abilities sharp. As soon as he entered the R&D department, he started to help with the designing of the RF line of refitted mobile suits, while also acting as the test pilot when they would let him and even doing sorties occasionally. However he made his name known when he designed the RF Efreet, incorporating into the design his desire to have a mobile suit had the fire power and defenses to hold the line till reinforcements arrived. Of course he took one as a personal suit and painted it green. He was still the Emerald Vanguard after all. Despite this some people refused to forget that he arrived on Mars as a Titan and fought as one during the rebellion, so he wasn't completely trusted. His lower rank despite his experience and long time in the military reflected this. |
