Discuss and suggest ideas for the Gryps era setting. This thread is mostly so we can put everything on record.

Obviously there should be the three "main" factions. AEUG, Titans, and Zeon Remnants/Axis. But also Federation on top of that mix of the three. What if we have it start shortly after the Colony 30 Incident at the very root of the conflict? In general Zeon should start out decentralized until Axis makes its return, or at least efforts should be kept small. As I recall a number of former Zeon members were in AEUG.
I also would like to see a combat system in which mobile suits support infantry units and infantry units support mobile suits. In case of pvp it is as simplified as possible to where you get a number of infantry units and roll a dice to see what damage they do. Or just flip a coin to see if they do damage against another unit or not. The point being that the mobile suits have the capability to change the course of a battle without infantry being too intensive or complicated.

Early on in the Gryps Conflict most members of the Titans were unaware of the atrocities committed(Colony 30 for example). Remember in AoZ the Titans Test Team thought they were just defending a colony from Zeon remnants when the G 3 gas was deployed. I know that’s a minor point but often you see the Titans displayed as a bunch of moustache twirling villains but for the most part they were merely soldiers and officers following the orders handed to them.
Zeon obviously enough would be the first group to take the fight to the Titans, meaning that they would be most likely providing the bulk of initial AEUG hardware as well that wasn’t sourced from Karaba ground forces.
Since it honestly makes more logistical sense based on connections I believe that the Titans should field more GM line suits such as the Quel, Guncannon II. They are an organization within and beholden to the Federation, at least before the Dakar speech anyway. It makes sense to source equipment for them from what already exists in the federation’s arsenal.

Since we seem to be deciding on an early U.C. 0084 starting point I've decided to do some digging.
U.C. 0084
0084.03.10
The truth about the colony drop and the details of the Gundam Development Project are erased from official records. All sentences connected with these affairs are thus nullified.
0084.06.17
After reorganizing the Sides, the Federation Assembly declares that the status quo of the Earth sphere will be maintained.
0084.09.21
Char Aznable returns to the Earth sphere and illegally accesses the Federation's military register. He then infiltrates the Federation Forces under an assumed name.
0084.12
Lieutenant Junior Grade Eliard Hunter is transferred to the Aswan, and subsequently, the Titans Test Team. (Advance of Zeta: The Flag of Titans, Episode 1)
U.C. 0085
0085.05
The Aswan docks at Side 1, Colony 25. Principality remnants attack the Gundam TR-1 Hazel inside the colony. (Advance of Zeta: The Flag of Titans, Episode 6)
0085.07.31
The Titans use poison gas to suppress a demonstration at Colony 30 of Side 1, wiping out the colony's three million inhabitants. Anti-Federation resistance increases as a result, and the Anti-Earth Union Group (AEUG) is organized.
The Black Otter team encounters enemy forces while escorting a transport ship to Side 1. The Gundam TR-1 Hazel is damaged. (Advance of Zeta: The Flag of Titans, Episode 12)
0085.08
The Black Otter team conducts another test of the Bizack TR-2 Bigwig and its long-range beam cannon. The cannon unit malfunctions during the firing test and Carl Matsubara is forced to jettison it. (Advance of Zeta: The Flag of Titans, Episode 15)
0085.09.08
Construction of the space colony Gryps, the new Titan headquarters, begins at Side 7.
0085.10
The Black Otter team battles Principality remnants near Konpeitoh, destroying two enemy mobile suits. The upgraded Gundam TR-1 Hazel Custom is reassigned to the team.

Yeah, we don't have to 100% commit to canon accuracy. In fact I would like to go with our own version of events and leave canon characters out of the picture entirely. Go for our own continuity but maintaining the broader elements of the base material.
This would be morel like our own retelling of Gryps rather than what is set in stone.

They are an organization within and beholden to the Federation, at least before the Dakar speech anyway. It makes sense to source equipment for them from what already exists in the federation’s arsenal. They address this within Zeta, honestly. While there's folks who generally mean well within the titans, they're still ultimately still wageing a war of spacenoid genocide and commmiting war crimes. Which is why you see folks like Emma Sheen, Blex, and Bright, etc. Who are very much illustrating that you have a choice whether or not to stand by or even participate in such things and be a monster yourself "just following orders". They show you can should do the right thing, even if you might pay dearly for it. The Titans are supposed to be the worst humanity has to offer, mustaches twirling. That's the point. If you water them down, you betray one of the core points and messages of the show; that any government, even yours, is capable of fascism and horrible atrocities.
But yeah, especially before we get the Hizack/Galbaldy Beta and Nemos produced, it makes sense for AEUG to probably have a mix of OYW Feddie (since a significant amount of the AEUG and very likely the vast majority of Karaba are former Federation) and Zeon tech while Titans are still using the old Federation stuff. But also the Titans should still go mostly mono-eye at some point. Because using Zeon type suits is still very much seems thematically important. They look just like Zeon because they are just like Zeon; they're just as bad as Zeon was under Gihren.

Personally I don’t have much concern over the pathos of the argument because it doesn’t make sense if you apply logic.
The Gryps conflict is a civil war in nature and should thus logically include some design overlaps between factions; lets not forget that both sides were supplied by Anaheim Electronics after all.
These are not canon events and are not canon characters so choosing to limit people’s options based on choices that were made to make it easier for younger audiences to be able to clearly tell who the bad guys are is a tad foolish since we’re not trying to sell merchandise here.

Primer: I think it would be good to flesh out the more sinister side of the Federation, as they generally were viewed as the antagonists of the Gryps era, it would be good to have some clear threats to the forming A.E.U.G. and the Zeon remnants. These characters would fill roles of some of the series antagonists while being unique enough to be distinct to the point different events could transpire leading to the end of the Gryps setting. This would also begin to murky the status of the Federation as corruption takes ahold and starts to instigate further conflict and the politics of the federation get crazier. | Loruche Ventair
A Sirocco equivalent who comes into the conflict later to be a primary antagonist. His time early conflict is spent in space making a pilgrimage around the entire Earth sphere and beyond. His power as a Newtype and skills as a commander, engineer and pilot are all top-rate making him a potent force. He serves initially as more of an advisor to the Federation and later will gain more control as his following grows. His outward motives are far more marketable and supportable than his true intentions, and he keeps all of these goals to only those he views he can completely trust. | Marz Hof
A Bask Om equivalent who was a Federation commander badly scared when Zeon performed the colony drop proclaiming independence. He has a deep-rooted hatred of all Zeon and its supporters and is ruthless in pursuit of wiping them all out. He is not against using any means necessary to achieve victory, and he feels little ill in taking the lives of innocent spacenoids as they are the ones who gave up their humanity the moment the attacked Earth. His sway and position in the formation of the Titans unit help him to push his agenda. |

| Newtype Labs
Newtypes as specifically relating to titans are being created as specialized fighting forces that are capable of even greater feats in order to more effectively carry out their mission to eradicate the Zeon Remnants. Cyber Newtypes are often unstable, in part due to the harsh conditions they are subjected to and the strict constraints of their purpose. The Titans know that Newtypes are a major contributor to the results of the OYW and following events, and Pilots capable of detecting and handling potential Zeon Newtypes are a must. As part of the Newtype project, special Mobile Suits and Armors are to be developed and tested by these created pilots. Including multi-weapon systems, extreme movement, and compatible neural systems. |
