UC 110
“Starting mobility test in three... two... one!” the voice of a technician said, counting down to the first application of a remarkable piece of one year war technology that hadn’t seen in use since shortly after the war. The two tone green Jagd Doga that was currently held clear of the floor and ground by heavy hydraulic restraints broke into a walking stride that moved far more fluidly than it regularly should have.
It had been a couple of months since his return to Side 3 and his loving and much loved wife and now Marten has found himself testing a new device that had been built for his use in mind. Somebody had pulled a few strings and he found himself the pilot of a more or less new Jagd Doga with a modern version of the Reuse Psycho Device. Instead of the older version of full limb attached ports he had been given a new set of cybernetics that could either interface with what looked like a standard control scheme for a modern panoramic cockpit. Combined with a modified EEG system and modified helmet the entire machine could be moved by thought as if it was his own body.
After the long journey home he had finally distanced his ties from the girl he knew as Helena but by now he was beginning to think that wasn’t her real name. In the end there had been a difficult conversation between the pair where he had made it unfortunately clear that at the end of the day Roxanne was the woman he loved. Ultimately he was happy to have met Helena and enjoyed their time together but his conscience made it difficult to embrace her so frequently.

While in side 3, Gabriela went by the name of Anna Marie Goldsmith. The biggest tip of for Marten being how readily she embraced this new identity as easy as putting a new set of clothes on. This wasn't the first time she'd adopted this false identity however doing so put her in contact back with her old employers in the EF naval intelligence agency. Everyone agreed sending her back to Mars at this point was counter productive so she was allowed to operate in side 3.
" I get it, our thing was a mere affair. I won't bring it back up ever again if that's what you want to hear." Gabriela was a bit disappointed when Marten refused to keep seeing her. It was a let down when she learned he was already married but it didn't prevent them from being intimate from time to time. She'd remained with the military academy acting as an instructor which was a lot of work but it was a role she was learning to adapt.
It was far easier for herself to be mad at Marten for being a cheating asshole rather than herself for seducing him, in the end of the day this affair amounted to nothing for the petite blond. It wasn't going to be easy finding another man like him, she thought to herself while having coffee alone in the academy cafeteria.

Marten thoroughly blamed himself for what happened, especially for the way he felt he had lead Helena on. Even though she was using another name now he still found it easier to call her that in private conversation, not that he believed it was genuine. He did his best to remain friendly but it didn’t take much to realize just how upset he had made her.
The performance test of the new control interface was wound down after approximately thirty minutes and Marten finally extracted himself from the cockpit of his machine and removed the fiber optics from his helmet as they spooled automatically into a slot in the control chair. Free of the machine he looked at his own arms reflexively. Internally there was a small shiver. Even with all the advances in cybernetics from the early prosthetics one thing had never been completely solved. The sensations passed through the touch sensors of modern cybernetics were good but there was still a cognitive disconnect between them and the host body, like looking at a photograph of something instead of the real thing. This feeling was only driven home when Marten had to strip down and with the help of an aid changed from one set of limbs to another.
Once he was changed he entered the faculty cafeteria and saw a familiar face that made him take the long way around the cafeteria before sitting down at the same table as the petite blonde after a moment’s hesitation. “Are your cadets going to be ready for the combat drill this afternoon?” he asked conversationally and cast a small glance at her as he sat down. Even though they were just two instructors sitting together his own emotions reached out to her, a combination of longing and want riding in on a wave of self-effacing introspection. He wanted her and was afraid to let her go yet there was a guilt tinged edge to his conscience that was probably almost visible.

" My boys are always ready to go." Gabriela had seen Marten arrive at the cafeteria, already aware of his intentions judging by the way he disguised his approach. That might have fooled another girl but she was not exactly ordinary. Her latent newtype abilities had begun to manifest which had definitely helped inside a MS cockpit. Thanks to the constant training her skill was at its peak.
" What's the matter with you, Marten Ral?" She would ask with a hint of mischievous curiosity. All these conflicting emotions only made her want to know the reason why he was now coming back with the tail between his legs. She thought all kinds of things from his wife not loving him anymore or simply that he'd gone mad and was now rejecting to settle into a normal life away from the uncertainty of combat.
" I don't want you to think you're the first or the last man i've ever slept with. I enjoyed our affair while it lasted and I still like you but let me tell you that eventually your dear wife will find out. Can you live knowing that?" Gabriela did not foolishly believed they could keep their affair a secret forever. Eventually Marten was going to slip and a cunning woman would be able to put two and two together.

Marten smiled wryly, almost sardonically, over the edge of his coffee. He met the blonde’s gaze and returned the smile at his own expense. He sighed and blinked slowly, focusing on events of the past. For a brief moment he was able to conjure up a visible image of the first night they were together. His body all but shaking the skin pale as a ghost the moment she found him. The image faded after a moment and he sighed with the exertion. Marten was growing as a newtype but the road had been hard and not entirely painless. The doctors had said something about his neurochemistry having been affected by his intimate brush with death. They had also said that his neurons would adapt in time though they hadn’t been able to predict how long that would be.
“I never said I was or that I wanted to be, you’re a free woman after all...” He sighed for a moment and there was a more genuine smile, but it was small. Now that he was back home he had no intention of breaking his fiancée’s trust, but he couldn’t find himself letting go easily. “Perhaps you are reading too much into this.” he countered, though not really believing it under his confident air. Over their nights together she had managed to inadvertently find a way into his heart even though he hadn’t wanted her to. “My own team has been rearing for a fight for a while now, among other things...”
He shook his head after a moment and finished his coffee, trying to get a grip on just what were his emotions. Gabriella hadn’t been his only partner since he had returned and Roxanne was certainly beginning to outdo the petite blonde, but he wasn’t going to admit that directly to her face. Even now under his uniform it would be plain to see how things had been between him and Roxanne since his return. There hadn’t been much time with the two of them alone that hadn’t been spent close together, and Roxanne had obviously been determined to make up for time lost. Even now the marks on his back ached at the memory of it, not that he minded.

The petite blond girl could only sigh deeply. " You are unbelievable." She would finally offer him a gentle smile of approval.
An hour or so later...
Now fully immersed in her Anna Marie Goldsmith persona she would arrive at the training grounds, her six cadets already formed running checks on their training Hizacks. She had done an acceptable job drilling into them the principles of maneuver Warfare. Their 120mm machine guns were mostly harmless paint rounds and inert heat hawks outfitted with sensors.
" Don't embarrass me out there!" She would instruct to all of them.

Marten was actually nervous. This drill was his first time going up against what he considered properly trained troops rather than just the provincials he sometimes saw the other Side 3 instructors as. The stubborn pride that came with being from Mars had yet to pass and the fact that his squad was going up against somebody who had plenty of time to go over his own tactics had him on edge. He had done a good job at training his team in the use of group tactics and maneuver warfare but he had a feeling that this time around he was up against somebody who could see through his own doctrines.
His team had been equipped identically to those they were going up against, using Hizacks with machine guns and inert heat hawks as well. He would have preferred having Gaza Ds for this exercise but those units were readily available this time. Preliminary checks had already been completed when he arrived, which was just as he had expected. If anything Marten had done an excellent job training them to be fast and efficient at preparedness.

Before launching, Gabriela made his intentions clear to Marten they would be settling matters on their own away from the cadets tied to the larger exercise. Upon arriving he would find a towering black mobile suit resembling a Doven Wolf but with a head design resembling some kind of Zeta Gundam derivative. His computer would just display it as Doven Wolf of a non specific type.
Upon making visual contact with the Jagd Doga she would raise the 120mm machinegun, firing a short three round burst of paint shells, no doubt giving him time to go evasive if he desired.

Marten has seen the machine gun come up and had begun to move as soon as he’s seen it. At his command the Jagd Doha bent at one knee and leaned to one side before kicking off the ground as it’s engines came on. The paint rounds missed the mobile suit itself, splattering against the dummy circular shield that was a stand in for the Jag Doga’s primarily defensive weapon. One round struck dead center as the other two pattered against it. The third leaving a smear on the edge as it struck with enough force for the paint cartridge to detonate before it was glanced aside.
Inside the cockpit there was a click of recognition in Marten’s head as he realized just how responsive the machine was behaving. He’d barely thought of the maneuver before the machine reacted to it. The 120mm machine gun came up braced against the machine’s upper arm and opened fire, barking out it’s own three rounds towards the other machine’s lower body in a scything arc.

The silver bullet rear boosters had been heating up this entire time, ready to propel it forward the moment Gabriela opened the throttle effectively getting it out of the way of the incoming response shots. A couple of paint rounds had struck parts of the outer armor but it was damage she could afford to take even if these had been live rounds. Instead of lining up for another pass, she turned back going around a shallow hill in order to break visual contact briefly.
This particular Silver Bullet was still equipped with the Doven Wolf grenade launchers so once she went around a pair of dummy grenades set on a proximity fuse would be deployed downwards in order to surprise him if he attempted to come straight at them. Marten could either come from over the hill or the opposite side but Gabby knew that would take him longer, hopefully giving her enough time to riddle him full of paint rounds first.

Choosing between a move over or around the hill had been obvious, and it wasn’t a difficult decision to make. Instead of charging head on Marten put his machine in to a low crouch and made for the side of the hill to his right with his shield raised defensively to cover his flank. The machine still carried the mounted shield on that arm as well so he could afford to act a bit recklessly even if these had been live rounds.
Even though Marten wasn’t available to see her he could still feel Gabby’s presence and his own took on an aggressive tang as the pair of funnels mounted on the left shield took flight. These bits were equipped with the kind of laser systems used to simulate beam weapons in training and were programmed to be recognized as such inside the cockpit of a mobile suit. The funnels went wide over the top of the hill and pivoted to rake their beams across the far side, trying to flush the Doven Wolf variant out.

The funnels took Gabriela completely by surprise, clearly showing she wasn't particularly experienced when dealing with remote weaponry. She'd gotten used to people falling from her tricks and now her over confidence came back to bite her. Each beam struck a joint effectively locking her mobile suit in place. All she could do now was act as an static gun emplacement, only being able to use the boosters to propel herself forward.
Thanks to that hill she didn't have a clear line of sight on Marten's Jagd Doga either. While it was possible to deploy the incoms it would only make her that much of an easier target to locate.
" That actually got me." The blond would sigh, realizing she was in a very tough spot. No matter the waist joint could still rate in a full 360 degree and the head of course could elevate it's twin 60mm vulcan mounts 90 degrees up, spraying a volley at the Funnel located straight above.

The funnel that had been over the Döven Wolf’s head tried to dodge but was hit full on the side, knocking it spinning end over end before crashing into the ground with a small thud. The remote weapon carved a small furrow before coming to rest, bent and thoroughly out of action. The second remote weapon made a wide arc passing above and around the hills, angling in for another attack. The remote weapon would lose function if it broke a line of sight with the Jagd Doga and under the stresses of gravity had possibly enough fuel for another attack run at most. The space use weapon was not designed for atmospheric combat and it had taken some pressure from the pilot to get the remote weapons mounted in the first place.
Marten’s own tactic was simple, breaking out into a fluid run and using his suit’s thrusters to bring him around the hill at speed. The combination of motion and engines covered ground quickly but also created tremors that shook the surrounding area with each footstep, creating craters with each impact. The Jagd Doga’s small thrusters left it less capable of cruising under gravity compared to the Döven Wolf’s but the machine moved quickly enough to make surprising speed as it traversed the side of the hill.

Even though she had been pinned down rather badly, Gabby was still able to more or less predict the direction of Marten's attack. Trying to get a read on him was difficult thanks to that feeling of emptiness that emanated from him but this was also an easy way to deduce his current position. As he came around the hill she was ready to press the trigger of the 120mm letting out a good burst ahead of his advancing path. She wasn't too concerned about those paint shells being blocked, soon reaching around for the dummy beam saber in her free hand, ready to counter attack if Marten decided to get cocky and settle this up close.
" Time to settle this!" She growled, wanting to give Marten a good taste of the way she fought in close quarters. Even with her half battered machine she would still flare up the thrusters, managing to move away from her previously static position and backwards to avoid any return fire.

The first paint shell collided squarely against the Jagd Doga’s shield but that was enough. Even as the machine tried to stabilize with its verniers and space use thrusters two more paint shells slipped past the shield and splattered squares beneath the unarmored armpit. The machine yawed unevenly on one foot before tipping off balance and beginning to fall.
Martin didn’t even try to raise his machine from the furrow it had ploughed in the training field. The impact had knocked it off balance enough for his attempt at correction to bring him airborne just long enough to drop the machine bodily to the ground with enough force to knock the wind out of him. He opened his eyes and groaned as the world swam around him and closed his eyes again. “Well at least the pilot safeties work...”
