Maya is typically rather cheerful and plucky, with a tendency to act in a rather coquettish manner around those she considers to be close to her - perhaps due to her nature as a Newtype, she can also be quite intuited with the emotions of others. While she often deems mobile suit combat enjoyable and treats other such situations with an almost off-putting glee, she is capable of approaching a manner with a serious demeanor when push comes to shove. She likes to enjoy herself quite a lot when off-duty.

Maya's mother had fled from Earth (Russia) to space in hopes of finding a better life for herself, meeting the man who would become her father in the future on Side 3. Both would become deep believers of Zeon and participate in the War of Independence. Refusing to submit to the Federation, they left and Side 3 and traveled through space, eventually settling on the asteroid of Palau and bringing Maya to the world in UC 0082. Her father would almost join the Delaz Fleet, but would instead fight during Char's Rebellion and die fighting the Federation.
Her mother would leave with her to Mars in panic, raising her to the best of her abilities before passing away and leaving Maya alone to grow up among more Zeon sympathizers. Her Newtype potential was discovered and she joined Mars Zeon's military forces, being given a mobile suit that would make full use of her abilities.

When the initial frame was brought over to Mars to be finished, only twelve of the twenty-four funnels had been installed due to difficulties. In addition, the I-Field Generator was weak to the point of refusing to function most of the time, but Maya compensated for it with her keen piloting reflexes.

 This same model of transport ship was modified to be equipped with machine guns for self-defense after it was commandeered by Mars Zeon and taken over by Maya. Maya holds ownership over the ship and command over the other given three mobile suits onboard.
