PERSONALITY & TRAITS Ai is a person who, despite her young age, had made decisions that most people were incapable of doing. She betrayed her homeland to side with the enemy, because it was the right thing to do. She fought and killed her own, because she wanted to save them. She fell in battle, for a cause. And she returned after that. This kind of baggage weights down on a person, and changes them. Ai did not go unchanged or unscathed through that ordeal either. It took a lot of resolve for her to do the right thing, and it worn her down. She regretted doing so a thousand times since, but the decision was made, and she went along with it. She is somewhat clingy towards things, possessions, and people. Once she attaches to someone, she finds it hard to let go. But at the same time, she is fearful of losing people she cares about. Military life is all she had known, and now it's a bit too late to change vocations, though she tried. Peaceful life is no longer an option, as too many things about her would need to be changed in order to fit in with the rest of the world. No, a life in the fleet, in a corp is her only home now. The person she used to be, Ai holds up as an unreachable ideal. Every now and then though, her old self awakens, especially in times of moral struggle, asking her to do her duty, and supporting selfless actions as honorable and just. But Ai is no longer the naive and honorable girl she used to be before. And her actions most of the times, first and foremost, would serve her rather than anyone else. Should one day she be given a choice between fighting for good, or joining a force inherently evil... She doesn't know. She hopes she will be strong enough to make the right choice. The physical injuries Ai had sustained during combat have crippled the girl's self-perception. She does not believe herself of being capable of forming a family and continuing the family name. She is very self-conscious about appearances and wears long-sleeved shirts and long pants to hide any machinery. She also wears a glove on her right hand. Due to this, and due to being slightly desperate, she may fall into all kinds of unhealthy relationships. When it comes to combat, however, Ai is a whole different person. With the experience of the One-Year War behind her and familiarity with Federation and Zeon tech, she is a ruthless and cunning combatant, with a penchant for close combat violence. Sadly, her expertise is 30 years or so outdated, but some crucial skills are still there. She is a disciplined officer who keeps her head cool and does not lose control of the situation. Not a coward, Ai prefers to command from the front. Which was how she was shot at the very end of the War. |

Ai is a spacenoid through and through. She was born on the S3 Colony into a family of Hattori Saya and Hattori Masanari, 23 years ago. Her family was relatively rich, but lived ascetically, as her parents have risen from the bottom and never believed in wasting resources. Despite the family having departed Earth at least a generation ago, Ai was raised in the old traditions revolving around restraint, respect, and honesty. Her father was a very stern man, who never liked to compromise. He used to say that compromise is a lie accepted by both sides, after neither succeeds in proving their truth. These words Ai remembered well, and never bothered compromising. She always did what she thought was right, and endured punishment from her family for disobedience. As all colonists, Ai was raised to dislike the Earth Federation, as it often restrained and restricted the colonies. When Zeon zum Deikun rose to power, and his philosophy of Cantonism spread among spacenoids, the Hattori accepted this philosophy as their own, and became supporters of the man and his vision for the colonies. Freedom from oppressive Federation government was a honorable goal. The girl enrolled into the military academy as soon as she was of appropriate age, having received her family's blessing to fight and protect the sovereignty of the newfound space republic from the hands of the corrupt and greedy Federation. Ai turned out to be an excellent soldier. She was brave, determined, and skillful. Her training was passed with marks high above average, especially when it came to spacial awareness and reflexes - even for a spacenoid, her physical abilities were considered rather outstanding. She made many friends with teachers and other cadets, showing them proper respect and appreciation even though her abilities in the field and in the VR chamber were proven to be superior to theirs. Ai was not smug about it - these were her comrades, after all. Having finished the academy training, the girl was enrolled into Zeon Space Force. However, the little story of a brave people fighting for freedom soon took a dastardly turn. After losing Zeon's charismatic leader, Deikun, the Republic of Zeon was reorganized into the Principality of Zeon, with Degwin Zabi as its supreme leader. First seeds of doubt were sewn that day. Ai did not trust the man, and the conspiracy theories around his ascension were too many to ignore. Still, she held to her loyalties and beliefs. She was a soldier of Zeon, and even though the state was transforming, she still held loyalty to her people. However, it was only the first sign that the situation was going to become worse, much worse. The Principality of Zeon was turning from a benevolent dictatorship into a nationalistic force. It was spearheaded by Degwin Zabi's son, Gihren Zabi. He conducted a purge of all known major supporters of Zeon zum Deikun. Ai was lucky - her parents were not major political figures, and managed to avoid the purge. However, despite all this, for a while, Ai believed in Zeon and in its cause. Gihren was a persuasive talker, and an excellent orator. It was hard to not feel his zeal and conviction, when listening to him speak. When he talked of the Earthnoid's crimes against her people, it made Ai's blood boil. It made everyone's blood boil, and the Federation did not make it better, acting hostile towards Zeon. A confrontation was inevitable. When the war began, Ai was spearheading the invasion. The Zaku were a complete surprise to the Federation forces, who were neither trained nor prepared to deal with such machines. They gave Zeon's forces critical advantage on many occasions. However, as the was lasted for months, Ai began doubting the legitimacy of the battles she waged. It sounded all good when standing in the crowds of Gihren's rallies, but the way Zeon waged war went against her principles. During the battles for the Moon, when both sides flung nukes at one another and destroyed colony clusters, Ai began doubting the reasons for this war even more. This was not for liberation of Zeon, or for some greater good. This looked like an extermination war. Dropping a colony on Australia was the tipping point for her, that convinced the young woman that the government she served faithfully to was a creation of evil. No excuse justified doing something so terrible, something that threatened to cripple the planet itself. And by serving an evil government, Ai felt herself being an accessory to evil. Overnight, a fateful decision was made. She infiltrated the hangars and stole her own mech. Using confusion to escape, Ai reached the closest Federation outpost she knew of, and surrendered herself and her Zaku. She was held prisoner, but not for very long. Turncoats were treated differently from prisoners of war. The fact she brought in a Zaku, completely equipped with armaments and weaponry, as well as the fact she was willing to use her skills to help the Federation in this war won Ai enough trust to be allowed into the Federation plans. However, they were cautious. Surveillance was around her at all times, and a bracelet was put around her wrist, so that the security could always know her exact location and monitor her movements. Ai accepted these precautions as necessary, even if she didn't like them. The girl was not expecting the Federation to trust her any more than they needed to. In its beleaguered state the Federation military desperately tried to scrounge up a response to Zeon's superior machines. For a while, Ai tasked with training some of the first batches of pilots for the newly-formed military academy. A prototype machine was being made to match Zeon's MSs. THe RX-78-1 model. When the invasion came to Earth, Ai was made one of the first pilots to lead it into battle against Zeon forces. Her fight against her own people had begun. And it did not promise to be an easy one. Ai fought from the beginning of the One-Year-War to the end of it. Her impact on the war was great for just one fugitive. She trained the first pilots of the EF, and won the first battles for them as well. From these small victories, a greater tide began that turned the war around. Once the EF matched Zeon in terms of pilot numbers and skill, the war was lost for the colonies. At the ending days of the war, she was already ranked Captain, having received many a military honor throughout the war. In the last battle for the Colonies, she was the one spearheading the assault through the energy shield. The incoming barrage hit her mech square in, and the firepower was too much for her machine to handle. The blast tore off her legs and her arm, and imbedded numerous shards into her head and torso. Through some miracle, she was picked up by a medical vessel soon enough to not bleed out or die from these otherwise mortal injuries. Deemed beyond saving, Ai was put in cryofreeze, to hopefully be saved in the future. |
