UC 111
On a peaceful day at Londenion, no sign of major conflict or battles. A pilot and a mechanic were busy having a test of wits against one another.
Sitting on a nearby stool, Sawyer cracked a piece of the ration stick off as he took a bite. Mulling over the stale taste in his mouth as he looked towards one of the many entrances of the hanger. "That is the fifth time you looked over there. Worried you might lose the bet?" A coy mechanic remarked after observing the pilot. Lieutenant Collins turned, finishing the last bit of the food. He crumpled the wrapper in his palm with a dissatisfied grunt. He knew making a bet with the maintenance chief was a bad idea. Rarely did they ever lose, because no one would ever want to cross the guy who fixes your suit. Plus they had ways of getting you things no one else could get you sometimes. "Listen, we agreed on a time. Until then I'm sticking to what I said. If I lose, then you get a crate of scotch for you and your team. If I win you are going to hook my ZZ Jr. up with a double beam rifle, same kind ZZ Jr.'s dad uses." Sawyer told the Chief. Pointing at him as if to affirm his stance on the bet. Thinking back, it was a really risky gamble. Hoping these young pilots would show up to a patrol around Londenion on a day off. He did make sure to have the message passed along through the proper channels. It wasn't really about rank, more they were considered off duty per the shift rotations. That was the first reason to worry, the second was a more personal reason to Sawyer. Most of pilots were so young, he doubted their sense of duty. They didn't have the background he did, nor the time in service. It was somewhat understandable if they didn't have the same drive as him.
Thinking more deeply on it, the old veteran began to worry. Losing to the Chief wouldn't just hurt his pride, but also his pay and reputation. "You brats better not stand me up." he grimaced under his breath.

18-year old Ryota Sahashi let out a quiet sigh as he made his way toward the hangar. Even though he'd volunteered to take part in the patrol on his day off, he was already regretting it now. He was already wondering just why he'd agreed to it. But it wasn't like he could just not show up; he didn't want to risk getting in too much trouble. He stopped for a moment once he was closer to the hangar, pulling a piece of paper out of his pocket and going back and forth between it and the building. "Yeah... I guess this is it," he said, resigning himself to his fate. Every now and then, he would think about the 'plan' he and Lorena had talked about and get annoyed that he wasn't having very much luck with it yet. "Well... maybe it'll go by quickly," he muttered to himself before he walked forward, pushing open the door and looking around as he walked in.

Even though it had been nearly 17 years since the last major conflict against Zeon, EFSF pilots were still being given rigorous training through their entire career. New recruits were given the focus but there were also exercises meant for the more experience cadre, of course no one was discouraged from messing around in their off time. It wasn't uncommon for Ensigns and 2nd lieutenants to gather hundreds of hours in their respective MS in a short span of time, compared to their OYW seniors that was thrice the amount of time behind the controls. Unlike what the propaganda said, Space Forces pilots no matter how fresh were also experienced in their craft, not lacking any qualities. Martian pilots in comparisons did not trained as intensively since fuel had to be rationed more thoroughly. One of the fresh bodies who volunteered to take part in Sawyer's surprise patrol was Ensign Valeria Hawker who had been recently been assigned a D-type Jegan. The seafoam green color scheme had been replaced decades ago, space forces mobile suits were now painted in two tone low visibility gray's through the entire fleet. " I wasn't expecting to see you here, Ryo." The golden eyed blond girl greeted Ryota when he arrived, an amused expression in her face.

"Ha! See I told you I would get a couple of them, Chief." Sawyer told the mechanic, amused.
The Mechanic turned away, waving his hand in a 'Yeah, yeah" sort of motion. Though it wasn't everyone he had hoped, a deal was a deal. Some pilots did show up on their day off for a surprise patrol. Looks like Sawyer would be working something out with the chief mechanic later on to get some extra equipment for his ZZ MP. In the meantime, Sawyer had some young pilots to attend too.
"Thank you for showing up, we are going to do a short patrol outside Londenion. Nothing fancy, just making sure no one is trying to sneak in. Let's get going though, before the day gets any later." Sawyer told the two.
With that he made his way to the Mass Production Double Zeta Gundam. Climbing into the cockpit as he began the boot up sequence. Moving to the launch bay as he took off, waiting for the pair of Ensigns to follow him.

When Ryota stepped into the hangar, he didn't expect to see a familiar blonde already there. "Valeria. Hey," the green-haired teen said, a smile on his face. At least there was someone else he knew that was going to be on this surprise patrol. He laughed a little when he he heard what the blonde said. "You don't have to seem so surprised," he added before Sawyer came over to great them and tell them a little more about the patrol.
Much like Valeria, Ryota had been assigned to a D-Type Jegan not too long ago. 'Let's get this over with,' he thought as he followed the Lieutenant and got into the cockpit of his mobile suit. He started the boot up sequence, watching as Sawyer made his way to the launch bay. "Ladies first?" Ryota said to Valeria with a grin.

When Sawyer came for them Valeria stood upright, snapping a respectful salute to the senior lieutenant. " Ensign Hawker and Sahashi, reporting for duty, sir!" THe blond girl knew Ryota was a bit of a slacker so she couldn't help and try to make an example. Thankfully, Sawyer didn't make too much of a fuzz about his lack of formal etiquette.
" Ryo~ You better start being more mindful." There were senior officers out there that would no doubt chew him up if he didn't commit to the code of conduct within the EFSF. Once she was done reminding him of that, the female ensign climbed up to the cockpit of her own Jegan. On the way to the catapult she made the Jegan pick a squad support weapon ( Jesta cannon standard gun) and a shield with the grenade launchers.
There hadn't been fighting around the moon since the Gryps conflict which had taken place a lifetime ago. Valeria and Ryota were literally as old as that civil war. Upon launching she would form up to Sawyer's 2 o'clock.

Since they were doing this on what should have been a day off, Ryota had been especially casual when meeting Sawyer and being introduced to him. So he was a little surprised when he saw the way Valeria suddenly snapped to attention and saluted before formally introducing the to of them to Lieutenant. And he was certainly confused when the blonde was scolding him a little. "What'd I do?" He asked fairly curiously, obviously a little puzzled.
And he was still wondering about that as he followed Valeria toward the launcher, grabbing a beam rifle as well as a shield with grenade launchers on it as well. He blinked he took his place on the launcher, finally putting the pieces together. 'I hope he's not pissed I didn't salute...' he thought to himself as he braced himself in his seat. Soon he was launching as well, joining the small patrol unit.

Sawyer mused with a smirk, watching the young pilots follow him into the vast emptiness of space. His mobile suit on a easy and simple course, allowing the two to form up. His eyes shifting along the monitor in the cockpit, the head of his mobile suit turning as well. The MP ZZ locking it's eyes on the Jegan of Ensign Ryota. Then slowly turned to face the other Jegan at his two o clock.
"Must be tough times again if kids like yourselves are signing up. The One Year War all over again, eh?" Sawyer commented, seeing how the two younger pilots would react.
His mobile suit occasionally picking up speed with a short burst of the verniers, then making a turn at appropriate angle. At some point, dropping down at a hard 90 degree angle. It was a wide patrol, not normal to the assignments the pilots of Londo Bell would be assigned.
"Oh and Ensign Sahashi, depending on your performance on this patrol. You may or may not owe me a salute once we get back." the older pilot quipped with a chuckle to the Jegan pilots.
With that the elder pilot steered the patrol unit into what looked like a mass amount of wreckage and debris.
"Heads up, ears open. I won't want to lose either of you in the debris field." Sawyer told the pair along side of him.

"Lieutenant, what exactly is the purpose for this surprise patrol?" Valeria would ask since this assignment was far from ordinary. She would have no trouble keeping up with his maneuvering, senior pilot or not she was well familiarized with the D type Jegan improved performance. Compared to the base model it felt like a more realized mobile suit.
" You better not think you old men are better just because you got to fly crappier mobile suits, sir." Even though she was an applied junio officer, Valeria was not above making her complaints known. Cutting through the Debris field was not a difficult task, she would merely draw a beam saber and sliced her way through any fragments large enough to be obstacles.

Ryota followed the two that had launched before him out into space, soon forming up with the small patrol. He glanced around once they'd gathered together, hoping things would stay quiet so this patrol would be finished as quickly as possible. He looked over toward the other two and blinked when he realized the Lieutenant was looking right at him. His thoughts immediately went back to what he'd been thinking before he launched, but he didn't say anything yet.
The green-haired teen heard Valeria's question, a little curious about just what the answer would be. And then he heard what Sawyer said about people like the two of them signing up for the Federation. Before he could say anything, he was surprised to hear the answer the blonde gave. He certainly hadn't expected to hear that from her. But it did bring a grin to his face. "It's not like anything's been done to stop the fighting yet," he added as he started moving faster, sticking with the group. He heard the comment Sawyer made to him directly, his eyes getting a little bigger. "Uh... yes, sir," he answered. 'I knew it,' he thought before he saw that they were approaching a debris field.
"Got it," he replied simply, following Valeria's example. He drew a beam saber and started to cut through anything that was a little too close or too big for comfort.

"Oh no, Ensign. If there is any reason I am better its because I am an old man. Not just the old mobile suit. As for the purpose of this surprise patrol. First it was to get me some extra equipment via a bet with the Chief. Second to get to work with some of you newer pilots, and third. See just how good you new types are." Sawyer responded with a chuckle. Sounding a bit amused by calling them a new type, more new to piloting than the legend so fondly talked about.
His mobile suit casually evaded the debris. Verniers easing it gently to the left, then the right. Sometimes up and down or some abstract angle. The perks of being familiar with your mobile suit, you know all the little quarks and traits to flying it. At a passing moment, the Lieutenant gave his machine a hard down pitch. The debris taking his place as he ducked out of view. Beginning to rapidly move between the clumps at a much higher speed.
"Don't fall behind this old man!" Sawyer announced over the radio.
The ZZ MP began to zig and zag among the field from cover to cover. The feet of the mobile suit impacting on large pieces of hull as it jumped off them. Manipulators pushing aside the left over refuse and creating movement in the field to trick the sensors. Intentionally trying to lose the Jegans among the floating wreckage.

Ensign Hawker Jegan caught up with Ryota's, reaching out to hold onto his shoulder so they could establish a direct and private line between each other, " I wish I had brought practice rounds. Paint his sorry can top to bottom." She growled, referencing the practice paint rounds used in training. Valeria was quickly losing her cool when she heard Sawyer's nonchalant answer. She wished she could just get a lock on his MP ZZ and blast it away with her weapons. " Screw him, we're not playing along. At least I am not." The blond girl had no qualms expressing her refusal to her fellow Ensign, now realizing why he had seemingly been dragged here. --- Sawyer was being followed but not by these unhappy pupils. Rather it was a much larger MS that began approaching his at high speed from a different direction. THere were two other signatures closing on them and judging by their speed they had to be Zeta types. All of a sudden he would merge with a Zeta Plus Hummingbird which began locking up on him. " I know it's you, Sawyer." A sultry female voice would call him directly. This unit was under the command of a certain Lt. Commander Megan O'donnell that had fought against Neo Zeon alongside him back in the 0090s, seemingly a lifetime ago. The Zeta plus accompanying this machine would go after Ryota and Valeria and would start harrassing them with violent close passes. " Hey, be careful you assholes!" Valeria would groan over the open channel, not happy to be teased by their commander and now by another unit that had randomly decided to pounce on them.

Ryota listened as Sawyer spoke to them, answering Valeria's question. He couldn't help roll his eyes a little when the Lieutenant talked about why he was better. "I'd be a little worried if he didn't have more experience piloting than us..." Ryota quietly commented to himself. And then he started explaining to them just why he'd set this surprise patrol up. It was irritating to hear the first reason being a bet. 'I signed up for this on a day off because he wanted to win a bet?' he thought to himself. And the teen was only confused when he mentioned newtypes, since Ryota certainly wasn't one.
As they continued making their way through the debris field at a more cautious pace, Ryota looked back toward Valeria when her Jegan reached for his shoulder, letting the two of them talk to each other. "Damn.... I really wish I would have thought of that," he replied to his fellow Ensign with a grin. It would have been nice to fire some paint rounds at the Lieutenant, especially while he was starting to dart all around the debris, pushing quite a bit of it around.
But his attention as quickly drawn to his radars when he saw two signatures getting closer to them. "Who the hell?" he said before hearing a woman's voice. The green-haired young man's eyebrows instantly raised when he heard her, suddenly very curious. "You gonna introduce us, Lieutenant?" Ryota quickly said to everyone. But before those introductions could be made, the Zeta Plus that had arrived with Megan started flying right passed him and Valeria, getting closer and closer every time. "Oh, fuck off!" he yelled, resisting the urge to turn the beam saber he was holding toward the irritating suit and pilot.

Frowning inside of his helmet, Sawyer yanked on the controls hard. The thrusters firing as the ZZ MP came to stop, spinning around to face the Humming Bird.
"I'd say that my wife is here, but well. Only in her wildest dreams would I call her that. But I guess I better introduce you to Lt.Commander Megan O'Donnells, and her Zeta Flight!" Sawyer announced to the two younger pilots.
With that, his mobile suit burst forward as the thrusters lit up brightly. The mass production Gundam type now chasing after the oversized Zeta knock off. Barrel rolling to the side as debris filled his view, Sawyer gritted his teeth as he pushed the thrusters up to keep up with the space adapted wave rider.
"If I knew you were here, Megan!! I might have just asked for a transfer back to the Earth!" Sawyer shouted at O'Donnells.
The ZZ MP's right manipulator extended up, rifle raised. A transparent red beam shot out from the barrel. A simple and harmless training laser that Federation beam rifles had installed for mock battles and training. They wouldn't damage a mobile suit, but it would be simulated in the computer as damage. The beam rifle cycling three more red beams towards the Humming Bird as he chased it.
"Switch to mock battle mode and show them what you got, Newbies! Don't let these Zeta knock offs push you around! That is an order!" Sawyer ordered Ryota and Valeria.
These transforming bastards want to play, then we'll play. Besides it was all to long since Sawyer squared up with Megan. Depressing the pedal and pulling back on the right control stick. Sawyer's suit downshifted into the debris as he began his duel with the Lt.Commander.

Even in wave rider form the turning capabilities of the Hummingbird rivaled those of dedicated high mobility models. Every time she gained a little distance from Sawyer he would find himself in front of her guns. She would fire the verniers on one side in order to keep him from guessing her precise heading and despite it's size, it managed to avoid the opening barrage of simulated beam rifle fire.
" I heard all about your little bet so decided to give your guys a real training exercise. You should be thanking me." She couldn't contain a chuckle, finding his comments quite comical if not a little baffling. The port side duo of mega particle guns would starts shooting and then the pair on the opposite side would open up wit ha slight delay in order to minimize barrel wear. Mega had always preferred to aim each shot separately since each one of those four mega particle guns wouldn't look out of place on an actual warships.
---
" What a pain! let's take them down one at a time, Ryo." Valeria had no intention of playing fair. Their leader could fight that monster bird alone, meanwhile she and her partner would focus her fire on the incoming Zeta Plus bearing down on them. The blond girl would urge him to focus his fire on the same target while she opened up with a long barrage of fully automatic fire from the squad support beam gun she'd brought.
Siad Zeta Plus would now start shooting at them with a practice laser coming out of it's nose mounted beam smart gun. Rate of fire was low but it managed to let out a couple of shots.
